Wednesday, September 30

Today, our learning goal was to practice counting by 10s, 100s, and 1000s from any given number.  Students are getting a real sense of numbers that come before and after a number with base ten numbers, for example, "what's 100 more than 1 900?"  In Religion, we started to look at what a pope is and who our Pope is today.

During our literacy block, we looked at a text about the grasslands.  We did a shared reading activity in order to practice using our schema before, during and after we read.  The following is a picture of our anchor chart in the classroom:

This would make a good reference for your son/daughter to use for their home reading.

Tuesday, September 29th

Good afternoon,
I would like to thanks the parents for being so cooperative.  I feel very fortunate to have so many parents willing to cooperate on your son's or daughter's behalf.  As I continue to get to know your child as a reader, writer and a mathematician, I will make a phone call when I see a concern.  I also like to inform parents of test or assignments results.  I usually do this by sending this home to be signed and returned the next day.  Again, thank you for being so cooperative!

Today, we continued to problem solve questions relating to whole numbers up to the 10 000.  I asked students to think of numbers, such as give a number between 12 000 and 14 500.  I also gave them questions such as, "what is 10 more of 1 460?"

During our literacy block, we had a school assembly in the gym.  Mr.Rodgers, our principal, introduced the WITS program to the students.  This is a program that will help students to resolve conflicts or bullying when they do arise.  Ask your child about the WITS program.

Monday, September 28th

Today, we used problem solving strategies to solve problems relating to place value.  Students were shown how to show their thinking when problem solving in Math.  This is very important in order to communicate how they solved it (their understanding).

During our literacy block, we read together a text about producers and consumers in a habitat.  I asked students to tap into their schema before, during, and after this rather difficult text.  We were able to do it together as a class.  I wanted to show the importance of being aware of their comprehension as they read.

Friday, September 25th

Today, we looked more closely at ordering and comparing numbers and using a number line to help show them in order.  In Religion, I read to them a text about how God is a long-lasting friend in our lives.  He is one that will always be there.  As a response, students wrote to God a letter expressing their thoughts and thanks to him.

During our literacy block, we looked at The Great Kapok Tree and used our schema (what we know in our brains) about the rainforests.  I showed the students how to be aware of using our schema before, during and after we read.  We will continue this on Monday.

-The pizza money is due next Friday, October 2nd.  Please refer to the school website for more information if you are interested in having pizza for your child once a week.
-Picture day is coming up on October 8th.  I will be sending home a paper reminder soon.
-The student activity fee of $35 is due on Monday, September 28th.

Optional - I posted some place value math sites to the right of this screen.  I will be adding more as we continue our math unit on number sense.  There is also that students can practice on.

Have a great weekend!

Thursday, September 24th

Today, our learning goal in Math was to compare and order numbers up to the ten thousands.  Students practised comparing each digit from left to right.  They also learned to use the greater >, less than <, and equal = signs.

During our literacy block, we continued to look at "Fix-up strategies".  This time, we looked more closely at using our schema (prior knowledge) when we read.  We did this by looking at the book, The Great Kapok Tree.

Wednesday, September 23

Good afternoon!

Today, we looked more closely at using a place value chart to understand the value of each digit up to the ten thousands.  Students were to create a riddle of a number of their choice.  They were to write different clues, such as "I am a number between 2 000 and 4 000".

During our literacy block, we looked at a few sentences and applied different punctuation marks for each.  I did a readaloud and demonstrated to students how to use "Fix-up strategies" as we read.  We developed an anchor chart together and came up with various strategies to use.  I will post it on the blog once we are completed with the chart to share with you.

-reading log
-students are to practise what has been assigned on Math Prodigy tonight.   They should all have their username and passwords marked down on the first page of their agenda book.  Please let me know if you are having any trouble logging in.
-The school activity fee of $35  is due September 28th.  The following is information on how to pay it online:
School Cash Online

For safety and efficiency reasons, Ottawa Catholic School Board  would like to reduce the amount of cash & cheques coming into our school. All payments to the school (activity fee, pizza, etc.) will now be done on-line. It takes less than 5 minutes to register.  Please visit our school web-site ( and follow the step-by-step instructions, so you will begin to receive email notifications regarding upcoming events involving your child(ren). If you are unable to register on-line, please call the school.

Have a great day!

Tuesday, September 22

Good afternoon,

Today, we practised reading and writing numbers up to the ten thousands in words.

During our literacy block, we looked at how to write with commas when there are a series of words listed in a sentence.  I also had the students pair up for reading and to be aware of what kind of strategies do they use when they come across a word they don't understand or when a part of the text is confusing.  I will be introducing "fix-up" strategies for reading tomorrow.

-reading log
-Go on to and check to see if username/password work.  I wrote their username and password on the first page of the agenda.
-Scholastic books orders went home.  The due date is Monday, September 28th.
-Math practice:  I sent home a math practice sheet yesterday and it was to be completed for today.  We will correct this tomorrow.  I kindly ask parents to check in with your child to ensure homework is being completed on a consistent basis, especially from Monday to Thursday (as there will usually be no homework on the weekends). If, for any reason, homework cannot be done, please leave me a note on the homework.

Thank you for your cooperation!

Monday, September 21st

Happy birthday, Thomas!

Today, we had a quick assessment on what we've learned so far.  I wanted to see where students were at.  I will send this home to be signed so that you can have a look at it also.
We also looked at the place value chart more closely: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, and ten thousands.

During our literacy block, we focused again on Conventions (e.g., spelling punctuation, etc...).  Today's focus was to look at the different types of punctuation.  We also looked at singular and plural nouns.  I also started to test students reading abilities.  This may take a little while however the class is cooperating by reading quietly during DEAR time.

-Math:  numbers up to 10 000  (If your child experiences difficulty with one part, please let me
by pointing it out on the sheet.  We will share our work together
                                                     in class.)

Friday, September 18th

Good day!

Today, we continued to explore numbers up to ten thousand.  Students now know how to write numbers in standard, with base ten blocks and in expanded form.

During the reading and writing block, we continued to focus on conventions of writing.  We practised using our spelling strategies to write familiar words.  We also looked at using capitalization when writing.  Students are also becoming very good at and respecting the routines during DEAR time (quiet reading time).  This will help me to start conferencing with students next week!

There will be no homework on the weekends.  However, I will be putting links on the right side of this blog for extra practice in spelling, reading and math in the next two weeks.  This is only optional and will be my recommended sites for that extra practice.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Thursday, September 17th

Good day everyone!

Today, we continued to learn the place value of numbers up to the thousands.  We included expanded form.  I think that students are becoming more comfortable now with understanding the value of each digit.

During second block, we looked at the Conventions of writing, mainly spelling.  We looked at the ways we can independently spell words.  We also practised having DEAR time.  This is a time when students drop everything and read.  It's also a good time for student-teacher conferencing.

-Reading logs are due tomorrow

If your child has a birthday, I don't mind if you do bring in treats for our morning class.  Please keep in mind that we do have peanut allergies.  We have 26 students in the morning.  Thanks!

Wednesday, September 16th

Hello everyone!

Today, students were to represent numbers using base ten blocks on their own.  I allowed students to choose numbers of their choice.  This helped a lot of students to understand the value of each digit up to the thousands.  We are working our way to the ten thousands.

Afterwards, we looked closely at our School Board theme in Religion.  Our theme is "Restore one another in a spirit of gentleness".  We discussed ways in which we can take care of each other and to guide each other to goodness.

Tuesday, September 15th

Good afternoon!

Today, we started to look closely at the place value of numbers.  I gave a refresher for looking at numbers up to the hundreds.  We did some hands on learning and group work with base ten blocks.

During second block, we looked at our learning skills that we brainstormed last week in groups.  We looked at the most important goals for responsibility, organization and collaboration.  I also introduced the seven traits of writing to the class.  I explained that these traits will help us by being our tools for writing throughout the school year.  The following is a link that outlines these traits:
Six Traits

Monday, September 14th

Good afternoon!

Today, we started to look at the various ways to problem solve in Math.  We built a Math Problem Solving Strategy list.  Students built an anchor chart in their notebooks for reference.  We also started our unit on Number Sense.  We started to look at the place value of numbers.  In grade four, the expectations are to learn up to the ten thousands of a number.

During second block, we had our Back to School liturgy in the gym.  When we came back to class, I explained to students about our routine for the reading logs that are going home today.  Students are to read for about twenty minutes each night from Monday to Thursday night and to return the reading logs every Friday morning.  Please help your child get into the routine each day and sign (first initial with last name is fine).  Thank you to be part of this endeavour!  Reading each day helps in all areas in their academics.

Thursday, September 10th

We reflected on our school year and some of the ways that can help us make it successful.  We also had a guest in from the Ottawa Library to meet with the grade fours.  Jenn, who is a librarian from the Glen Cairn branch, has been a guest in my class for a few years now.  She did some booktalks and, through this, has piqued interests in many students towards some new titles and series.  Jenn will be coming back for a visit later in October.  It is great that we can have her come to our class!

-An information sheet is going home from the office.  Please look over the information and do  any necessary corrections and return back to the school.
-I will be having a picnic in the school yard tomorrow with the class at 11am.  I asked students to  bring a small blanket so that they can sit on it.   We will be eating outside from 11-11:30.  You are welcome to join us!

Wednesday, September 9th

Good afternoon!

Today, we continued to practice our routines and reviewed the rules in the classroom.  Students are quickly learning how to do this!  It's great!

We had an assembly during the second block.  Mr.Rogers, our principal, made many introductions for teachers and students.  He also read a book called The Golden Rule.  His message through this readaloud was to ask students to treat others the way they want to be treated.

-Please fill out the green and yellow sheets that are going home today and return them tomorrow.  It would be greatly appreciated!

Parents, I would really like to thank you for following my blog.  This will help your child with his/her learning skills/work habits and to keep up with the demands of grade four.

Looking forward to a wonderful year!

Tuesday, September 8th

Welcome back!

It was a very good day today!  It was also a pleasure to have met many parents this morning.  I think grade four will be a great year.  Although it was a very hot day being in a portable today, we managed to get through most of the activities planned.

We were busy with some 'get to know you' activities and some logistics, such as sharing the weekly schedule and class lists for morning and afternoon groups.

The following pertains to the new School Cash On-line system that Holy Redeemer will be using as of this year:
School Cash Online
For safety and efficiency reasons, Ottawa Catholic School Board  would like to reduce the amount of cash & cheques coming into our school. All payments to the school (activity fee, pizza, etc.) will now be done on-line. It takes less than 5 minutes to register.  Please visit our school web-site ( and follow the step-by-step instructions, so you will begin to receive email notifications regarding upcoming events involving your child(ren). If you are unable to register on-line, please call the school.

As you will see in the school newsletter, the activity fee for the 2015-2016 school year will be $35.00.  There are also instructions at the back of the newsletter on how to register for the School Cash Online.

I will always post what's for homework at the end of each blog so that you are aware of it at home.  I will also advise you when if there are important forms or letters going home on here and in the agenda books.  The agenda book will be a very important and useful tool to use for communication and homework.  Students are asked to bring it to and from home on a daily basis.  Please encourage your child to show you his/her agenda each evening.

Don't forget that you can add your email address at the top right part of the screen in order to have my blogs delivered to you.

-Go over pages 2-8 of the agenda book as it has important
  information for the school year.
-My welcome letter is going home:  supply list is in there.
-The school newsletter is going home.

Have a great evening and here's to a great school year!
