Thursday, September 28th

In math class today, we looked at ordering and comparing numbers up to ten thousand.  We also learned how to multiply with base ten numbers.  For example, 10x560=5 600.

In language, I explicitly taught the students when to capitalize while writing.  We looked closely at common and proper nouns.

-reading log due tomorrow
-study spelling words for tomorrow
-some students are going home to have their quiz signed (Math:  writing numbers in words).
Please sign and return tomorrow to school.  Thank you!

Wednesday, September 27th

Today, our learning goal was to understand what is meant by being a responsible digital citizen.  We had some good discussions following some videos provided by our school board.  Students are learning proper etiquette, how to be safe, how to handle online bullying, and so forth.

I also opened up a class account in EPIC.  If you google EPIC, your child will have access to tons of books to read online.  Some students are familiar with the site as they have used it before.  I will be posting the classroom code tomorrow in class and students will have to write this in the front of their agenda books.

-study spelling words for Friday

Monday, September 11th

Good afternoon!

Today in class, we looked at the different kinds of problem solving strategies that we can use when solving a tough question in math, i.e., use base ten numbers, guess and check, etc..

We also looked more closely at the learning skills.  I explained to students that the learning skills are probably the most important grades on your report card as they affect your grades in all subjects.  Students worked in groups to figure out what it looks like in each category, i.e., responsibility is following the rules and routines independently.

-reading log.
Read for 20 minutes and record in the red duotang that was sent home.  In the first box, students may write a short summary of what happened at the beginning, middle and end.

Tomorrow is my open house between 3-4 pm.  You may come by and visit my portable anytime during that hour to say hi.  It would be great to meet you!

Thursday, September 7th

Hello parents/guardians,
Open House day is next week on Wednesday, September 13th.  Unfortunately, I will be away that day as I will be undergoing surgery for my shoulder.  However, I will be having my own Open House the day before in my portable on Tuesday, September 12th between 3-4 pm.  All parents and guardians are invited to come for a visit in the classroom!

P.S. Please note that you will still be able to meet your child's other teachers on September 13th, along with a presentation in the gym.  Everything on that night begins at 6 pm.

Hope to see you there!

Wednesday, September 6th

It's the second day of school, and, already, I'm seeing some progress in regards to students settling into the routines in the classroom.  Our focus these days are just about that - settling in.  I'm hoping to go over the learning skills before the end of the week to have students make sense of the learning skills they are graded on (i.e., self-regulation, organization, responsibility).

Homework will commence next week.

Please send back the forms that need to be signed by Friday.
