Today in math, we learned about volume - the space inside an object.
Students used their knowledge of area A = L x W and added height to use the formula:
V = L x W for volume.
Homework:
-Students are asked to go into their Mathletics from their OCSB student portal to catch up on the assigned work in there. Due Thursday.
Welcome parents! Here is where I will be keeping you up to date with what's happening in the classroom.

In math, students are continuing to explore area and perimeter. They are learning how to show their thinking clearly and to become more comfortable using formulas.
Example of showing their thinking for area and perimeter |
Homework:
There is no homework for Thursday. However, I encourage students to practice using Prodigy or Mathletics. I assigned some practice in both programs.
Reminder:
I am taking the morning group to the Scholastic book fair. Students may bring in money to make purchases for books.
Friday is a P.D.day.

The following is some information that came my way from the Ottawa librarian at the Hazeldean branch:
The Hazeldean Branch is offering 2 sessions of a Science Odyssey program on Sunday, May 20^{th} in the afternoon.
If you know families who might be interested, or some budding scientists who are looking to try new things, please share this information with them. Registration required.
Crime scene investigation | EnquĂȘte criminelle
We need your help in solving a mystery! In groups, you will test different materials found at the scene of the crime. This workshop introduces the study of chemistry and biology of the human body. Ages 7 - 12.
Presented by Adventures in Engineering and Science at the University of Ottawa as part of the Science Odyssey. Science Odyssey is Canada's largest celebration of science, technology, engineering and mathematics

Today, we continued to explore the concepts of area and perimeter of different shapes.
Students now know how to show their thinking for both:
A = L x W (multiply) or P = S + S + S (add up the sides)
Homework:
-I sent home a graph paper for students to create a Minecraft head. They are to use about 4 or 5 colours to create their head and then find the perimeter and area for each colour.
Here is an example of a finished Minecraft head:
Reminder:
Tomorrow is Open House. You are welcome to come by for a visit in the morning!

We are studying about perimeter and area. The students' learning goal is to properly show their thinking when problem solving the area or perimeter shapes or objects.
I have added practice in Math Prodigy and Mathletics for both areas.
There is no homework for Thursday.
Reminder:
Please sign your child's test on multiplication and division and return it on Thursday.

We started our new unit on perimeter, area, and volume yesterday. Students have seemed to grasp perimeter quickly. I am glad to see that many of them remembered this concept from last year.
As for the final test on multiplication and division, they will be going home I have all of them and corrected.
Our times tables quizzes are also done. Our goal was to know our facts up to the ten times tables fluently. Congratulations to Adam, Ben, Daniel, Sayeda, Vincent, and Warren for achieving your goal!
